1. Start with your everyday destination
Don’t choose only a familiar city name. Compare your work or study address, acceptable journey and monthly budget. Consider where you would shop and how you would get home in the evening. Budget separately for any temporary accommodation and your longer-term home search.
2. Check your residence route
Use the IND to check which procedure fits your nationality and reason for moving. A tenancy agreement and an immigration procedure are separate parts of relocation. A general checklist does not establish that your individual residence arrangements are complete.
3. Plan municipal registration
If you intend to stay in the Netherlands for more than four months, government guidance requires registration with the municipality where you live within five days of arrival. Make an appointment. Check that municipality’s document requirements in advance; shorter stays use a different registration route.
4. Agree on documents and a viewing
Ask which overseas income or employment documents the provider accepts and whether a translation is needed. Explain what you already have and what will follow. If you cannot attend a viewing, arrange someone you trust. Ask about the exact property, inventory and conditions, including during a video call.
5. Write out your first-month budget
List the deposit, first rent, travel, furnishing and any overlap separately. Ask which costs the rent includes and which services you must arrange yourself. When you arrive, keep the handover report, meter readings and maintenance contact details together.
Check current municipal and IND information for your situation. Use Dakkies to compare homes, then decide when the terms and your moving plans work together.
